Sale of Cruel Foie Gras Now Banned Within City Limits of Chicago

Chicago City Council Passes Ordinance on April 26, 2006 -

In an historic move, the Chicago City Council banned the sale of cruel foie gras within city limits! The passing of this humane proposal, introduced by Alderman Joe Moore, makes Chicago the first city in America to enact such a measure. The vote relays the humane concerns of Illinois citizens who were recently polled by Zogby, revealing an overwhelming 79 percent of whom agree that foie gras production should be banned in the state. This legislation will have repercussions across the country. This is a triumph for farm animals everywhere and the individuals who advocate on their behalf. [farm sanctuary]

What is foie gras? Epicurious.com says:

Although the literal translation from French is "fat liver," foie gras is the term generally used for goose liver. This specialty of Alsace and Perigord is, in fact, the enlarged liver from a goose or duck that has been force-fed and fattened over a period of four to five months. These specially bred fowl are not permitted to exercise, which, combined with the overeating, creates a huge (up to 3 pounds), fatty liver. After the bird is killed, the liver is soaked overnight in milk, water or port. It's drained, then marinated in a mixture usually consisting of Armagnac, Port, or Madeira and various seasonings. The livers are then cooked, usually by baking.

No, this is not a post about celebrities. But Pamela Anderson, a.k.a. Mrs. Kid Rock, would appreciate it. Foie Gras is icky. Don't eat it. Do it for the ducks.
